Lo Que Permanece (What Remains) explores the quiet ways culture is preserved across generations. Drawing from heirloom textiles, religious iconography, and contemporary silhouettes, the design reflects how traditions evolve while remaining deeply rooted in identity. By softening familiar symbols and reimagining them through a modern lens, the garment celebrates cultural inheritance as something that is lived, worn, and lovingly passed from one generation to the next.
Dissecting the symbolism:
- The fitted denim bodice reinterprets one of America's most recognizable textiles through a softer, contemporary silhouette. Cropped proportions and delicate finishing transform denim from a symbol of labor into one of protection and strength, demonstrating how familiar materials can take on new meaning when viewed through the lens of cultural identity.
- The embroidered Sacred Heart, positioned over the chest, serves as the emotional center of the garment. More than a religious reference, it symbolizes inherited love, faith, family, and cultural memory. Placed directly over the heart, it represents the traditions and values carried from one generation to the next.
- The tiered lace skirt draws inspiration from heirloom textiles and domestic craftsmanship. Rather than functioning solely as a symbol of femininity, the lace honors the generations of artisans, mothers, and grandmothers whose handiwork has quietly preserved culture through clothing, celebration, and everyday life.
