Falling Short explores the emotional weight of impossible beauty standards and the lasting impact of body shaming on women.
Inspired by research and personal surveys, the garment serves as a symbolic representation of the psychological and physical toll of constantly feeling as though you are never enough. The design takes the form of a fallen angel, representing the loss of self that can result from striving toward unattainable ideals.
Throughout the garment, words collected from women's lived experiences are incorporated into the design. Whether spoken by family, friends, partners, or strangers, these phrases reflect the criticism and expectations many women encounter throughout their lives.
Every material choice reinforces the narrative. The white cotton base references innocence and purity culture, while the leather bustier symbolizes the emotional armor many women feel compelled to wear. Laser-embossed lace softens the leather's rigidity, creating a contrast between femininity and resilience. The structured silhouette intentionally cinches the waist, emphasizing the persistent societal expectation of achieving the "ideal" hourglass figure.
Falling Short invites viewers to consider the invisible burden of beauty standards and the lasting effects they leave behind.
